Plot summary
Two psychiatrists give a nurse, Jane Marvin, the drug sodium pentothal, and under its influence she recounts a life she had forgotten, when she was Joyce Webster. Joyce had just married Paul Webster, and on their honeymoon train he stepped off to make a phone call; the train pulled away without him. She hires private detectives and searches for months, until a lead takes her to Bayou Landing, Louisiana, and to the Cypresses Plantation, where she says Paul once lived. Lavinia Hawthorne, the estate's stern mistress, calls her a liar and tries to throw her out, and the household keeps its silence about Paul. A local doctor, Mark Sinclair, comes to question her, and Joyce refuses to leave.
