Plot summary
Short of money and with no family to turn to, Julia Ross goes to a London employment agency, where Mrs. Sparkes recommends her to Mrs. Hughes, a wealthy widow looking for a live-in secretary. Mrs. Hughes approves of her and insists she move into her house that very night. Two days later Julia wakes in a house by the sea in Cornwall. Her belongings are gone. She is told she is Marion, the wife of Ralph Hughes, and the household has been told she is recovering from a nervous breakdown. Because of that, the servants pay no attention when she says who she really is, and every attempt she makes to get away comes to nothing.
