Richard Crane

Biography

Richard Crane was an American character actor whose movie and television work spanned three decades, with uncredited parts in 1940s features. He was born in New Castle, Indiana. His best-remembered part was the lead in Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, a science fiction show with a single season beginning in 1953; a 1952 contract required annual tours performing as that character for school groups. On television he was Lieutenant Cummings in the crime drama Mysteries of Chinatown in 1949 and 1950, Gene Plehan in Surfside 6 from 1960 to 1962, and a guest on Perry Mason, Wagon Train, The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, Lassie, The Rifleman and Gang Busters, playing Homer Van Meter. He also took the lead in the 1951 serial Mysterious Island, based on a Jules Verne novel, and in 1953 he appeared as Dick Preston in Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe. He acted on stage at the Las Palmas Theater and died in 1969.
