Plot summary
Cuba after World War II: immigrants who cannot get visas turn to Palinov, a café owner in Havana, to be taken into the United States illegally. After one of them dies, the American operative Peter Karczag is sent to Havana and passes himself off as a Hungarian in need of Palinov's services. There he meets Marianne Lorress, an Austrian refugee of the Buchenwald camp, penniless and waiting for Palinov to smuggle her out. Karczag intends to use her to learn where and when Palinov acts next.
