Plot summary
Dorothy Kingship is a college student whose father, Leo Kingship, owns a mining fortune. Bud Corliss, a fellow student at the university, woos her solely to get at that fortune. When Dorothy becomes pregnant with Bud's child, Bud realizes that her father will disinherit her, which would put the fortune out of his reach. Losing the money does not trouble Dorothy at all. The pregnancy releases her from her father's control, something she has never had before, and she insists on marrying Bud. Bud tells her he will look after her and agrees to the wedding, though he does so reluctantly.
