Macy Gray
Biography
Macy Gray is a singer whose raspy voice and blend of soul and R&B draw on Billie Holiday. Born Natalie McIntyre in Canton, Ohio, she studied scriptwriting at the University of Southern California and began by writing songs for a friend; when the intended vocalist failed to appear at a demo session, she recorded the songs herself. A demo made with writer-producer Joe Solo led to jazz cafe performances, and after Atlantic Records dropped her, a development deal helped revive her career, leading to a 1998 contract with Epic Records. Her 1999 single I Try was a commercial breakthrough and preceded her debut album, On How Life Is (1999); the song earned a Grammy for best female pop vocal performance. She has released ten studio albums and appeared in films including Training Day (2001), Lackawanna Blues (2005), Idlewild (2006), For Colored Girls (2010), and The Paperboy (2012).

Gray taught herself to sing for a gig after a friend asked her to join his jazz band and gave her jazz CDs to study.
A change of course
Gray was signed to Atlantic Records but dropped when the A&R man who signed her, Tom Carolan, left the label; she returned to Ohio before Jeff Blue brought her back to music in 1997.
First role
In 2001, Macy Gray acted for the first time, appearing in the thriller Training Day. That same year, she won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "I Try".
