Plot summary
Shirley Ann Whitfield, known to everyone as Ma'Dere, runs a dry cleaning business in Los Angeles and shares her home with Joe Black, a church deacon. Her six children come back for Christmas, the first time in four years. Lisa, the eldest daughter, is urged by her husband Malcolm to persuade her siblings to sell the family business, which sets her against Kelli. Quentin, a jazz musician who has been away for four years, arrives as a surprise and treats Joe coldly, still hoping his father will return. Claude, a marine, comes home for the holiday and Michael, called Baby, lives at home while he figures out what to do with his life.
