Plot summary
The Multiverse Authority polices travel between parallel universes, where every person exists in many versions. Gabriel Yulaw, once one of its agents, has killed his counterparts in other universes, absorbing their life energy, believing the sole survivor will become a godlike being known as the One. MVA agents Roedecker and Funsch take him into custody in the Alpha Universe, and he escapes to the Charis Universe, where the last known variant lives. That variant is Gabe Law, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy. For two years his strength, speed and mental sharpness have risen, and neither he nor T.K., his wife, can account for it.
