Plot summary
In 1972 a half-Mexican teenager, Miklo Velka, leaves his abusive father and Las Vegas behind and turns up in East Los Angeles, where his cousins Paco and Cruz live. Miklo is a cousin to the pair; Paco and Cruz are half-brothers, and both belong to the Vatos Locos, a neighborhood street gang. Miklo joins them. The gang attacks a rival set called the Tres Puntos, which answers by going after Cruz and injuring his back so severely that the damage never heals. Membership in the gang is sealed by killing, and the only way out is to be killed. The three relatives stay in one another's lives over the years that follow.

- Director Hackford said a real fistfight between moviegoers at a test screening in Las Vegas, serious enough that theater managers called the police, spooked the studio into renaming the film from its original title to avoid inciting audiences, a decision he strongly disagreed with.
- Its Los Angeles release was deliberately delayed to coincide with the Rodney King trial verdict, because the studio feared the film could spark unrest similar to the 1992 riots.
- The production filmed inside San Quentin State Prison itself, using real inmates as extras and staff as technical advisers; actor Danny Trejo, who plays Geronimo, had actually served time there before becoming an actor.
- The famous mural shown in the film's climax was never actually painted on the real wall; producers lacked permission, so an artist painted it on plywood panels propped in front of the reservoir wall instead.
- During filming, a caterer was actually wounded by gunfire in a real drive-by shooting while the crew was taking down a set.
- Edward James Olmos was offered the chance to both direct and star in the film, but turned the project down over creative differences; Andy García, Lou Diamond Phillips and Sean Penn were also considered for roles.
