Soul of the Game (1996) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1946, Black players are barred from the major leagues, and Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager, means to change that. He sends men to watch games across the Negro leagues and tells them that playing ability alone is not enough: a player must also be mature enough to handle the hostility that will come his way. The scouts weigh the stars of those leagues, among them Satchel Paige, a pitcher, and Josh Gibson, a hitter, both of whom expect Rickey to come for one of them. Jackie Robinson, a rookie on Paige's Kansas City Monarchs, catches the eye of one of Rickey's scouts.
