Plot summary
Johnny Utah is riding motorbikes along a steep ridgeline with his friend Jeff when Jeff overshoots a landing on a lone stone column and falls to his death. Seven years later Utah joins the FBI. At a briefing he hears how thieves took diamonds from a Mumbai skyscraper and escaped by parachute, and how a crew in Mexico unloaded millions in bills and vanished into the Cave of Swallows. Utah ties the crimes to one group and to the Ozaki 8, eight trials that honor the forces of nature.

- The remake abandoned green screens and Hollywood trickery for real practical stunts: director Ericson Core gathered the world's best snowboarders, free climbers, big-wave surfers, motocross riders and wingsuit pilots and filmed them essentially as actors.
- For the wingsuit sequence, the job of wearing a cinema-quality Red camera on his head fell to Florez and Boole, neither of whom had done camera work before; the 15-pound (6.8 kg) camera significantly altered how pilots flew, and the team made over 60 jumps in two weeks.
- Australian surfer Laurie Towner, hired as the stunt double for lead character Johnny Utah, broke his jaw and suffered other injuries during stunt surfing at Teahupoo for the film in mid-September 2014.
- A Class 4 avalanche was triggered during filming of the snowboarding sequence, for which director Ericson Core and members of his crew roped down cliffs to record the snowboarders from the best angles.
- For the rock climbing scenes at Angel Falls in Venezuela, the cast and crew set up three camps and, after reaching the falls by motorized canoe from a small island with no vehicles, negotiated with a local general for a helicopter to lift them and several tons of equipment out.
- For the free-soloing shots, the climbers were tied into thin Spectra line that could be digitized out of the finished film, and all the bolts used in the filming were removed afterwards.
- Gerard Butler was in negotiations to play Bodhi, the part Patrick Swayze originated, but the talks fell through; Édgar Ramírez, in talks by mid-May 2014, was cast in the role instead.
