Plot summary
Eleven-year-old Nat Love loses both parents when Rufus Buck arrives at the family dinner and shoots them, cutting a cross into the boy's face. Two decades on, Love is an outlaw who hunts down one of Buck's old crew, while his partners, the sharpshooter Bill Pickett and the quick draw Jim Beckwourth, rob another gang and learn from the only man left alive that the money they took belongs to Buck. Love calls on Mary Fields, a saloon keeper and his former lover. Trudy Smith and Cherokee Bill spring Buck from a prison train and take him home to Redwood, where he pistol-whips the sheriff, Wiley Escoe, and orders the townspeople to raise $50,000. Marshal Bass Reeves arrests Love in a saloon, then offers to go after Buck with him.
