Biography
Yasiin Bey is an American rapper, singer and actor who first appeared on screen as a young performer in TV movies, sitcoms and plays. Born in Brooklyn, he started his music career in 1994 with the group Urban Thermo Dynamics and later formed the duo Black Star with Talib Kweli. His solo debut Black on Both Sides (1999) and his fourth album The Ecstatic (2009) both drew critical praise. He has acted in films such as Bamboozled (2000), Brown Sugar (2002), The Italian Job (2003), The Woodsman (2004) and Something the Lord Made (2004), earning him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and an Image Award. He won a Black Reel Award for The Woodsman, appeared on Broadway in Topdog/Underdog, and hosted Def Poetry Jam between 2002 and 2007. Other credits include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Be Kind Rewind (2008) and Next Day Air (2009). In 2011 he announced he had legally changed his name to Yasiin Bey.

Bey was a child actor before his music career, sometimes billed as Dante Beze. In the 1990 family sitcom You Take the Kids, he was the oldest child, and the show was canceled shortly after.
Behind the award
Bey and Jeffrey Wright won a Special Award from the Outer Critics Circle for their joint performance in Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer-winning Broadway play Topdog/Underdog.
A change of course
Bey announced in January 2016 that he was retiring from both the music recording industry and Hollywood, effective immediately, and planned to release a final album that year.
