Plot summary
Henry Pearl lives in the southern town of Battlecreek and spends his hours after dark. A rare skin condition leaves him badly burned by sunlight, and scars from a childhood accident show what exposure once cost him. Tallulah, his mother, has kept him at home and under close supervision for his whole life. He paints murals on his bedroom walls, holds down the gas station's night shift alongside Arthur, a family friend, and eats at a diner where Melinda waits tables. Alison reaches town stranded when her car gives out, and takes a waitressing job to cover the repair bill. The time she and Henry spend together draws his mother's disapproval.
