Cameron Mitchell
Biography
Cameron Mitchell was an American actor whose career in film, stage, and television lasted 55 years. Born in Dallastown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Shrewsbury, he started out on Broadway in the late 1930s, then signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and appeared in They Were Expendable (1945) and Command Decision (1948). He originated Happy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman on Broadway, earning a 1949 Theatre World Award, and later reprised the part in the 1951 film. At 20th Century Fox his credits included How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and other major features. He then played Buck Cannon in the NBC Western The High Chaparral from 1967 to 1971. In later years he became known for exploitation and horror films, among them Blood and Black Lace (1964), Hombre (1967), The Toolbox Murders (1978), My Favorite Year (1982), From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), and Space Mutiny (1988). He died in 1994.

First role
Cameron Mitchell made his Broadway debut in 1939 in a minor role in Jeremiah, then joined Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne's National Theater Company in that year's production of The Taming of the Shrew.
A first
Cameron Mitchell was the first to play Happy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman on Broadway in 1949, and his performance won him a Theatre World Award that year. He played the same part in the 1951 film.
Early training
In 1937, Mitchell's high-school French teacher, Helena Hartenstein, gave him money to go to New York City and try out at three acting schools. He turned down a scholarship to Alviene and picked the Theatre School of Dramatic Arts.
A change of course
Mitchell was a bombardier in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, and ended his service as a second lieutenant. He joked that he never hit anything.
