Troy Donahue
Biography
Troy Donahue was an American film and television actor who became popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Born in New York City, he moved to California in 1956 and started in small parts in movies such as The Tarnished Angels (1957) and The Monolith Monsters (1957). His big break came opposite Sandra Dee in A Summer Place (1959), where he played Johnny Hunter; the film was a box-office hit and earned him a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer, Male. He then signed with Warner Bros. and appeared in Imitation of Life (1959), starred in the television series Surfside 6, and made A Distant Trumpet (1964). Later credits included Seizure (1974), Oliver Stone's directorial debut, Cockfighter (1974), Grandview, U.S.A. (1984), and John Waters's Cry-Baby (1990). He toured in Bye Bye Birdie in 1997 and continued acting in films into the late 1990s, with his final role in The Boys Behind the Desk. He died in 2001.

Donahue was reportedly set to be cast in Elia Kazan's Splendor in the Grass but lost the part to Warren Beatty, and Warner Bros. put him in the TV series Surfside 6 instead.
Early training
Donahue trained briefly with actor and director Ezra Stone, a family friend, while acting in summer stock in Bucks County.
Beyond film
Donahue released singles for Warner Bros. Records at the height of his fame, including "Live Young" and "Somebody Loves Me", but none reached the Billboard Hot 100.
