Plot summary
Marseille, 1794. Désirée Clary invites Joseph Bonaparte to call on her family, and he arrives the next day with his brother, Captain Napoleon. Joseph and Désirée's sister Julie are drawn to each other at once, while Napoleon is taken with Désirée, though he tells her that he and his brother need the dowries of the Clary sisters. Taken to Paris under arrest, he returns cleared of the charges, ordered to hunt down royalists. Désirée asks him to give up his commission and go into business with her brother. He refuses and proposes marriage; she accepts and lends him the money to travel back to Paris, where he promises to come for their wedding.
