Plot summary
The standoffish Mrs. Engels lets rooms in her Victorian mansion on a cliff above the Pacific to several college students, and keeps an attic room to herself. Her teenage son Mason is the one who shows the boarders around. Scotty Parker arrives needing a place for the fall semester and joins Doris, Peter and Jack in the house. The four of them go out on a double date, and the night ends with two of them alone on the beach. Shortly afterward one of the boarders is killed, and Lieutenant McGiver is assigned to the case and begins asking about the household.

- Director Denny Harris was unsatisfied with the rough cut of The Silent Scream and rewrote and recast several key roles; after reshoots in June 1978, only around fifteen percent of the initial shoot's footage remained in the finished film.
- Diane McBain was told her character, a female police detective, was "unbelievable," and the part was recast with Cameron Mitchell; Yvonne De Carlo, Brad Reardon and Avery Schreiber, who replaced Ric Mancini, were also added to the cast.
