Plot summary
In 1891, a prison ship goes down in the Caribbean, and the convicts who reach land find an uncharted island. With them is Lieutenant Claude de Ross, a military doctor. Fishmen pick the men off one by one, and the survivors head inland, where they come upon Edmond Rackham and Amanda Marvin, a woman he keeps captive. Amanda's father, Professor Ernest Marvin, is a biologist at work on the island, and Shakira, a voodoo priestess in Rackham's employ, foretells destruction. The survivors are invited to stay at a house on the island, the convicts begin planning a way off it, and the doctor starts asking questions about the men who have gone missing.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jim Wynorski re-titled the film again as Screamers, with a tag line about men turned inside out, and had a scene shot only for a trailer designed to lure audiences. Misled customers rioted at drive-ins, so New World was forced to splice the trailer footage into every theatrical print.
- In 1980, about 30 minutes of footage was removed from the original film and replaced with new material for international release, first retitled Something Waits in the Dark and later re-edited and re-released in 1981 as Screamers.
