Plot summary
A ship's engine trouble strands three American adventurers in a Mexican fishing village. There Leah Fuller enters the saloon, tosses a bag of coins down on their table and offers them two thousand dollars each to free her husband John, who is trapped in a gold mine far inland. Another customer in the saloon, Vicente, takes the offer, and the Americans sign on. On the journey, Leah tells Hooker that the mine stands where a boom town once stood until a volcanic eruption destroyed it, leaving the church steeple and the gold mine. The priest there had called the place the garden of evil, and the Indians treat the volcano as sacred.
