Plot summary
Robert and Mamie Eunson leave Scotland for America in 1856, invited by Mamie's uncle, Will Jameson, to the logging village of Eureka, Wisconsin. They find that he has died and that his cabin is gone, so they begin again on their own until the neighbors arrive in numbers to help them rebuild. Mamie, who was pregnant on the crossing, has a son, Robbie, soon after the house is finished, with a local midwife attending. Robert hires on at a logging camp, where an unplanned fistfight wins him the respect of the camp boss, Tom Cullen. A boatbuilding business follows, the family prospers, and five more children are born: Jimmy, Kirk, Annabelle, Elizabeth and Jane.
