Plot summary

Emily Parker, fourteen, disappears from her rural home, taken by a faceless, heavy-breathing man in black leather gloves tipped with razor blades. He makes his way to Johannesburg and takes a room at Baron Court, a tenement hotel in Doornfontein. Two months later, with the police no closer to finding Emily or identifying her attacker, her mother Joan and her father turn to Bill Carson, a retired Marine colonel who works as a psychic detective. Joan needs to know whether her daughter is alive; her father wants the man found. Carson warns them that they would be better off not finding him. In the same city, the man fixates on Mary Jones, an American teacher who shares a bungalow in Saxonwold with her eighteen-year-old Afrikaner cousin Jo. Mary sees him outside her classroom and at the mall.
