Plot summary
Aboard the generation ship Southern Sun, thirteen generations have been born and died on the long voyage to a new world. Elijah Kalgan, who commands the ship's security force, the Enforcers, plots with the chief engineer MacPhearson and pirates operating from Corona Borealis to break the ship's navigation systems and turn the vessel toward their constellation. His sabotage strikes as a small craft carrying an important professor comes in to land, and the craft crashes. The pilot, Dave Ryder, survives. Two officers who remain loyal, Commander Jansen and Captain Devers, ask Ryder to help regain the ship, and Jansen's daughter, Dr. Lea Jansen, offers reluctant aid.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Space Mutiny (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- On the first day of shooting, director David Winters learned his father had died and handed direction to his assistant Neal Sundstrom; the production's law firm summoned him back because he was contractually obligated to direct. A compromise with executive producer Hope Holiday kept the grieving Winters in his hotel room, driven to set only when financiers visited.
- After Space Mutiny wrapped and Neal Sundstrom had left the project, director David Winters, who had just been diagnosed with endocarditis, edited the film from his hospital room, where an editing bay was installed.
- The space exteriors in Space Mutiny were lifted wholesale from Battlestar Galactica and licensed for $20,000; Winters claimed the footage was added during post-production to salvage the picture and was not part of the original plan.
- When Space Mutiny was announced as "complete" at the October 1987 MIFED, David Winters found it too short and hired David A. Prior to shoot a Belarian subplot in mid-1988 using the Deadly Prey crew and dancers from the producer's own studio; Winters has since disowned the film.
- Cinematographer Vincent G. Fox gave Space Mutiny a reddish tint to pass sunlight peering through the windows as glare from the ship's reactors; a line of dialogue explaining it was never filmed, and the lab responsible for color correction erased the effect.
- Space Mutiny was the basis for the 20th episode of season 8 of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the popularity of that episode led the former MST3K troupe, performing as RiffTrax, to broadcast a second commentary live in theaters on 14 June 2018.
