Aldo Ray
Biography
Born in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, and raised in Crockett, California, Aldo Ray was a film and television actor who became a Columbia Pictures contract player. His early work in The Marrying Kind (1952) and Pat and Mike (1952) brought stardom, and the latter earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Newcomer. Ray was frequently typecast as tough guys and soldiers because of his athletic build and gravelly voice, a quality that fit Battle Cry (1955), We're No Angels (1955), Nightfall (1956), Men in War (1957), God's Little Acre (1958), and The Naked and the Dead (1958). He later played Sergeant Muldoon in The Green Berets (1968). In his later years he worked mainly in low-budget and exploitation films, though he voiced a character in The Secret of NIMH (1982) and appeared in The Sicilian (1987).

Columbia wanted to rename him John Harrison because Aldo Da Re sounded too close to Dare, but he refused and Aldo Ray was the compromise.

Ray was set to play Private Robert Prewitt in From Here to Eternity, but Fred Zinnemann insisted Montgomery Clift be cast instead.
