Plot summary
In 1876, the North-West Mounted Police send Constable Duncan MacDonald to persuade a band of Cree to sign Treaty 6 with the Crown and return to their reservation above the Canadian border. He is accompanied by Natayo, a Blackfoot scout who has been blackmailed into helping. The Cree are hostile at first. A mirage leads them to believe that Queen Victoria has shown her power.

- During location shooting, production was interrupted by snowstorms and the flash of a nuclear weapon test 300 miles away at the Nevada Proving Ground during Operation Tumbler-Snapper.
- During development, technical advisor on Native American issues Nipo T. Strongheart wrote a critical review of the proposed screenplay, prompting a meeting with studio executives and a major reconstruction of the whole project.
- Director Joseph M. Newman scouted locations in Montana, but finding nothing suitable, the film was made in Sedona, Arizona, where producers recruited 450 Navajo to play Cree when large numbers were needed.
