Plot summary
Ruth Etting sings and dances for dimes in a Chicago nightclub. When a customer bothers her and she kicks him, her job is in danger. Martin Snyder, a man with a game leg whom people call The Gimp, comes to her aid. He owns a laundry business that covers a protection racket, and he has clout. Etting is eager to get into show business, and Snyder lands her a place in a floor show and pays for lessons with a singing coach, Johnny Alderman, who is drawn to her. She and Alderman are thankful, but Snyder lets her know he expects her to go to Miami with him, not on business. She says no, yet he keeps pursuing her. Working through Bernie Loomis, he lines up a radio program for her and then a job with the Ziegfeld Follies.

- The role of Snyder was first intended for Spencer Tracy, who turned it down, and after Ava Gardner refused the Etting role, James Cagney suggested Doris Day to producer Joe Pasternak; MGM then suspended Gardner's salary as punishment.
- All but two of the songs in the film were hits that Ruth Etting had recorded in the 1920s and early 1930s; the two written for the film were Chilton Price's "Never Look Back" and "I'll Never Stop Loving You" by Nicholas Brodzsky and Sammy Cahn.
