Plot summary
Sean Kelly lives with his father David and his mother Linda in the town of Oakmoor Crossing, and the family's days pass in ordinary suburban fashion as Halloween approaches. A stranger, Vivian Machen, comes to the house and introduces herself. She tells them that her family and theirs both have deep roots in the town, and that one of Sean's ancestors hanged a man called Walter Machen, who was thought to be a warlock. According to Vivian, Walter called a scarecrow with a pumpkin head, Jack-O, up out of hell to punish the Kellys, and the ancestor buried the creature in a shallow grave. Several teenagers bring Jack-O back, and it goes after the Kellys.
