Horror in the 2010s had no single face. The decade's output runs from comedy to family drama, and more than a few films sit in two camps at once. A household under pressure is the recurring subject, and the pressure can arrive from anywhere. What holds the group together is a taste for dread over shock, and for the ordinary room that stops feeling safe. Some of these films go openly supernatural, others stay grounded, and a few leave an audience guessing which of the two it is watching. James Wan directs two of them.
The order rests on audience score, weighted so that films thousands have rated carry more than a small circle of admirers could give them. Feature length is required, and a film needs several hundred votes to qualify.
Jordan Peele's Get Out sends a photographer named Chris to meet his girlfriend Rose and her family, whose welcome is too smooth by a wide margin. The household staff behave just as strangely. Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams and Catherine Keener star. Jemaine Clement directs and appears in What We Do in the Shadows, with Taika Waititi and Jonny Brugh alongside him. A camera crew trails four housemates who prowl for blood after dark, and the humor sits in the household routine as much as in the blood. A Quiet Place turns silence into the whole mechanism. John Krasinski directs and stars with Emily Blunt and Millicent Simmonds. The family at the center has learned to sign and to lay sand paths because creatures hunt by sound.
