Plot summary
Days before Christmas in 1899, Edward Newgate, newly graduated from Oxford, reaches Stonehearst Asylum to finish his training in asylum medicine. Armed men let him in, and Mickey Finn brings him to the superintendent, Dr. Silas Lamb, who takes him under his wing. Lamb explains that he neither drugs nor locks up the patients and that he indulges their delusions when that makes them happier. Newgate is disturbed by what he sees and becomes infatuated with Eliza Graves, a patient of high social standing who seems out of place there. One night he hears knocking from somewhere in the depths of the building.
