Plot summary
Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator, is at breakfast with his wife Karin and their daughters when television news mentions strife and martial law. Driving through Philadelphia, the family is trapped in an outbreak of fast-moving zombies; a bitten person changes in about twelve seconds. They flee in a stolen RV, stop near Newark for food and Rachel's asthma medicine, and shelter in an apartment complex, where a boy named Tomas translates for them. Thierry Umutoni, an old friend, sends a helicopter that carries the Lanes to a Navy ship in the Atlantic, where scientists study the outbreak. A virologist, Andrew Fassbach, argues the disease is viral, so its source must be located before a vaccine can be made. Gerry agrees to help find it on the promise his family stays safe.

- The Hungarian Counter Terrorism Centre raided the warehouse where guns had been delivered for use as filming props: the 85 assault rifles, sniper rifles and handguns had been flown into Budapest overnight on a private aircraft, and although the import documentation indicated they had been disabled, all were found to be fully functional.
- In June 2012 the release date was pushed back and Lindelof was hired to rewrite the third act; he did not have time to finish, so Goddard was brought in, and seven weeks of additional shooting in Budapest ballooned the budget to a reported $190 million, listed by some publications as high as $269 million.
- Paramount changed a scene in which the characters speculate that the zombie outbreak originated in mainland China, in hopes of landing a distribution deal in the country, but an executive told TheWrap in June that a cut of the film was rejected by Chinese censors.
