Plot summary
After the horrors of the Overlook Hotel, the young Danny Torrance is haunted by its ghosts, and Dick Hallorann shows him how to trap them in psychic lockboxes. Years later, Dan is an alcoholic in New Jersey, drinking to keep the shining quiet, until he settles in Frazier, New Hampshire, joins Alcoholics Anonymous and takes work at a hospice. There he comforts the dying, and one patient gives him the name Doctor Sleep. A teenager, Abra Stone, whose shine is greater than his, reaches out to him across the miles. Rose the Hat leads the True Knot, a cult of psychic vampires that tortures and kills people who shine; by 2019, the group is starving.

- Stephen King initially rejected Mike Flanagan's pitch to bring back the Overlook Hotel in Doctor Sleep, but changed his mind after Flanagan pitched a scene set inside the hotel toward the end of the film.
- Danny Lloyd, who played young Danny Torrance in The Shining, came out of roughly 38 years of retirement to make a cameo in Doctor Sleep as an adult spectator at Bradley Trevor's baseball game, after Mike Flanagan direct messaged him on Twitter.
- Warner Bros. could not secure a budget for Doctor Sleep for several years until the box office success of its 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's It led the studio to fast track production.
- Mike Flanagan considered casting a Nicholson impersonator as Jack Torrance, or a big-name actor reminiscent of Nicholson such as Leonardo DiCaprio or Christian Slater, before deciding to find actors who reminded him of the iconic performances without tipping into parody.
