Trailer

Plot summary

A weekend trip to a cousin's cabin in the woods brings five college students, Dana, Curt, Jules, Holden and Marty, to an isolated spot far from anyone. The cellar door swings open, and the group goes down to look, finding relics and curios left behind. Dana reads from the diary of Patience Buckner, a one-time resident, and the Buckner family returns. In an underground laboratory, engineers Sitterson and Hadley follow the cabin on screens and use mind-altering drugs to shape what the students do, steering them toward choices prepared in advance. Their work serves a ritual, and word has come that the Stockholm operation failed, leaving their site and one in Japan to carry it out.

  • A planned tie-in between the film and the video game Left 4 Dead 2, which would have added downloadable content based on the movie's settings, was scrapped when distributor MGM ran into financial trouble, but Valve still let the filmmakers use monster designs from Left 4 Dead 2 in the movie's own creature vault.

  • In 2015, author Peter Gallagher sued Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard in California federal court, alleging the film copied his 2006 novel The Little White Trip: A Night in the Pines without permission and demanding $10 million in damages.
  • Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon, who had previously worked together on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, wrote the screenplay in three days, describing it as an attempt to “revitalize” the slasher film genre and as a critical satire on torture porn.
  • The film's release was thrown into limbo on June 17, 2010, when MGM announced that it would be delayed indefinitely due to ongoing financial difficulties at the studio.
