Plot summary
After a zombie apocalypse, survivors live in a city behind walls that keep out the living dead. Their leader, Grigio, sends a group of teenagers outside to gather food and supplies for the population. His daughter Julie goes with her boyfriend Perry and her friend Nora. Zombies surprise them. Among the undead is R, a young zombie with no memories of his own, who spends his days in an airport with the others, including his friend M. R is drawn to Julie, saves her from the other zombies, and hides her in the airplane where he lives.

- Nicholas Hoult and other zombie actors practiced with circus performers to achieve the right body moves; Hoult said there were days with the Cirque du Soleil people where they took their shoes off in a dance studio and made their bodies feel very heavy.
- Hoult said he drew a lot of his inspiration from Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, thinking of that movie as a zombie film whether it was or not, because you had to feel sorry for Edward: "I was thinking of Edward when I did R."
