Plot summary
For twelve years, Jack has killed people in Washington state and treated the murders as artistic achievements. He explains this view to a companion he calls Verge as he recounts his crimes. The first of these begins on a rural road, where a woman is stranded by a flat tire. Her jack is broken, so Jack drives her to a blacksmith, and when the jack fails again on their return, she asks to be taken back. Her manner offends him, and he strikes her with the tire jack, then stores her body in an industrial freezer at a factory he once bought from a pizzeria.
