Plot summary
Michelle leaves her New Orleans apartment after an argument with her fiancé, Ben, and drives through rural Louisiana. The radio reports blackouts in several major cities. Another vehicle knocks her car off the road, and she wakes with an injured leg, chained inside a bunker. Howard, an older man, unchains her and says he brought her below to keep her alive, because an attack has left the air outside poisoned. He walks her through the bunker and introduces Emmett. At the airlock window, Howard points to two decayed pigs he says the attack killed. Michelle also spots Howard's truck and remembers it striking her car. Emmett, alone with her, insists the attack happened and says he begged to be let inside.

- Damien Chazelle was brought in to rewrite Campbell and Stuecken's draft and to direct the film, but dropped out of directing when his own Whiplash project received funding.
- Winstead and Gallagher were aware during production that the film had thematic similarities to Cloverfield, but did not learn there would be an official connection until they were told the chosen title, only a few days before the trailer appeared.
