Plot summary
In 1630s New England, William is banished from his Puritan settlement after a dispute over religion, and he takes his wife Katherine and their children, Thomasin, Caleb, and the twins Mercy and Jonas, to a farm at the edge of a large forest. There Katherine gives birth to a fifth child, Samuel. Samuel disappears one afternoon while Thomasin is watching him, and the family comes to believe that a wolf carried him off. Katherine weeps and prays, the crops fail, and she blames Thomasin for the loss of her silver cup and for the baby. Caleb asks his father whether the unbaptized Samuel can enter Heaven. Mercy and Jonas play with the family's goat, Black Phillip, and say the animal speaks to them.

- Robert Eggers wanted to shoot the film on location in New England but chose Canada instead for tax incentives, then scouted off the map and found Kiosk, Ontario, which was extremely remote, the nearest town made New Hampshire look like a metropolis.
- Robert Eggers vetoed electronic instruments and wanted no traditional harmony or melody in Mark Korven's score, so Korven wrote it with atypical instruments including the nyckelharpa and waterphone.
- For an authentic period look, Robert Eggers shot The Witch using only natural light; indoors, the only lighting on set was candles.
- Costume designer Linda Muir consulted 35 books in the Clothes of the Common People in Elizabethan and Early Stuart England series to plan the film's costumes, which were made of wool, linen and hemp.
- The coven of witches at the end of The Witch was played by a troupe of Butoh dancers, who created their own choreography.
