Plot summary
In 1986, the child Adelaide Thomas strays from her parents on the Santa Cruz boardwalk and enters a funhouse, where she comes upon a girl identical to herself; afterward she refuses to speak. Thirty-three years on, Adelaide, her husband Gabe and their children Zora and Jason settle into a beach house for a vacation. Friends Josh and Kitty Tyler and the Tylers' girls, Becca and Lindsey, join them at the shore. There paramedics carry off a dead man holding a sign Adelaide saw as a child, and Jason glimpses a bloodied figure standing still with arms outstretched. That night Adelaide confides in Gabe about the funhouse. The power dies, and four figures appear in the driveway.

- For Red, Lupita Nyong'o used a voice inspired by spasmodic dysphonia, working with an ear, nose and throat doctor, a vocal therapist and a dialect coach because she couldn't risk damaging her voice playing two roles.
- Disability rights groups the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association and RespectAbility criticized Lupita Nyong'o for basing Red's voice on spasmodic dysphonia, and she later apologized, saying she had "crafted Red with love and care".
