Plot summary
Rocky, Alex and Money make a living breaking into houses around Detroit. Rocky shares a home with her younger sister Diddy and their abusive mother Ginger, and she wants the two of them to start over in California. Alex, whose father is a policeman, uses his father's computer to find wealthy homes to rob. Money brings the trio a tip: a blind Gulf War veteran named Norman Nordstrom keeps $300,000 in cash in an abandoned neighborhood, a settlement paid after a young woman killed his daughter in a car accident. Alex objects to robbing a blind man, but Rocky talks him into it. Watching the house, they learn Norman lives alone and keeps a rottweiler. At night, they drug the dog and enter.

- Fede Alvarez built the film as an answer to the complaints about his Evil Dead remake, that it was a remake, had too much blood and leaned on shock, so he wrote an original story with less gore, more suspense and nothing supernatural, which he felt had become too trendy.
- Making the villain blind came from deliberately subtracting an ability rather than adding one. Alvarez said writers normally give such a figure powers to make him more menacing than a normal person, so they tried the reverse and took his eyes out.
- Though the story is set in a derelict corner of Detroit, almost all of it was shot in Hungary, with only a few Detroit views filmed on location. Alvarez put the cost at about half of Evil Dead and welcomed it, because less money meant less studio interference.
