Plot summary
Biologist and former soldier Lena is held at a secret facility, recounting her expedition into the Shimmer, a quarantined zone that appeared three years earlier when a meteor struck a lighthouse in Florida, and where natural laws break down. Teams sent inside have vanished without trace. Kane, Lena's husband, went missing on one of those teams, and a year later he reappears in their home, then collapses. Agents intercept the ambulance and take them both away; Kane is placed in intensive care. Psychologist Dr. Ventress invites Lena to join a scientific trip into the Shimmer alongside three other women, Cassie, Anya and Josie. Lena keeps it to herself that Kane is her husband.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Annihilation (2018)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- A poorly received test screening left David Ellison, a financier and producer at Skydance, worried that the film was "too intellectual" and "too complicated"; he demanded changes including making Portman's character more sympathetic and changing the ending, but producer Scott Rudin sided with the director, who did not want to alter the film.
- In the Southern Reach novels the biologist is described as being of Asian descent and the psychologist as mixed-race and half-Indigenous, so when Portman and Leigh were cast in those roles the Media Action Network for Asian Americans and the American Indians in Film and Television accused Garland of whitewashing in 2018.
