Plot summary
In Derry, Maine, Bill Denbrough builds a paper boat for his younger brother Georgie, who loses it down a storm drain and never comes home. The following summer Bill and his friends Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak and Stanley Uris dodge the town's bullies, led by Henry Bowers, while Bill searches the marshy Barrens, convinced his brother may still be alive. A classmate, Ben Hanscom, has uncovered the town's long history of disappearances and joins them, along with Beverly Marsh, who is tormented at school, and Mike Hanlon, rescued from Bowers. Each has already met something wearing the face of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and they conclude that one being is stalking them all.

- Will Poulter was cast as Pennywise for Cary Fukunaga's version of It but dropped out after a new director came aboard, saying he had subscribed to Fukunaga's vision. Mark Rylance, Ben Mendelsohn, Kirk Acevedo, Hugo Weaving, Jenny Slate and Tilda Swinton were considered for the role, and Mendelsohn passed after New Line wanted him to take a sizable pay cut.
- Fukunaga dropped out as director of It in May 2015; according to TheWrap he clashed with New Line over budget cuts behind the first film's $30 million greenlight, but he said the real disagreement was over the story's direction, as his unconventional horror film didn't fit the studio's spending algorithm.
- Unadjusted for inflation, It became the highest-grossing horror film of all time, and at the time of its release it was the third-highest-grossing R-rated film.
- Producer Barbara Muschietti said only one scene was dropped from the adaptation for being too horrific: a boy having his back broken and being thrown in the toilets, whose visual translation was judged too much.
- The Ontario town of Port Hope was dressed to double as Derry, Maine: a shoe shop became a butcher's, the Capitol Theatre appeared to be showing Batman and Lethal Weapon 2, a statue of Paul Bunyan went up in Memorial Park and US flags replaced Canadian ones downtown.
- Rather than build the spooky tree meant to loom at the house, the production used a real tree that a crew member spotted on his drive into the office one morning, buying it from its owner after negotiating.
