Plot summary
Outside Philadelphia, three teenage girls are kidnapped from a car after a birthday party and held in an underground lair: Claire and Marcia, who are friends, and their classmate Casey. Their captor is Kevin, a man who has lived for years with 23 distinct personalities and holds down a job with the help of his therapist, Dr. Karen Fletcher. One alter, Barry, has been deciding which of the others may take control of the body, and has lately shut out Dennis and Patricia. Patricia believes in a 24th alter, The Beast, who has not yet appeared. The girls meet Patricia, who keeps them apart from Dennis, and Hedwig, a nine-year-old alter. Casey works on the different personalities around her, looking for a chance to escape.
