Plot summary
In the Old West, Liz works as a midwife and is mute, communicating through sign language. She lives with her husband Eli, his son Matthew, and their daughter Sam. When a new preacher called the Reverend arrives, Liz recognizes his voice and is terrified. During a difficult birth, she euthanizes the baby to save the mother and tells the mother only afterward. The baby's father Nathan blames Liz and threatens her family. The Reverend comes to their home and tells Liz she is guilty of the baby's death and must be punished. The next morning, Eli's sheep are dead and Nathan has vanished.
