Plot summary
Josh and Renai Lambert have moved their family into a new house, along with sons Dalton and Foster and baby daughter Kali. One evening Dalton climbs into the attic, falls from an unsteady ladder and hits his head. The following day he falls into a deep sleep that doctors cannot explain. Three months pass without change, and his parents bring him home from the hospital. Then the house turns hostile: noises at night, a security alarm that trips by itself, and Foster insisting he has watched his sleeping brother walk through the rooms.

- James Wan made Insidious in part to prove he could make a film without the violence and gore of his Saw series, after feeling that gore put people off and made them hesitant to work with him.
- Joseph Bishara composed the score for Insidious and also plays the film's demon on screen; the music was performed with a quartet and a piano, and much of it was improvised and shaped during editing.
- Principal photography on Insidious was finished in three weeks in 2010, and Patrick Wilson said the cast worked long days with many pages a day and little coverage or rehearsal.
