Plot summary

The Abbott family lives without a sound on an isolated farm in Millbrook, New York, because blind aliens with sharp hearing have killed most of the population. The parents, Lee and Evelyn, and their children Regan, Marcus and Beau survive by signing in American Sign Language and by walking on paths of laid sand. In the basement Lee watches a bank of monitors and searches the radio bands for other survivors, and he keeps trying to finish a hearing aid for Regan, his deaf daughter. Evelyn is pregnant, with a few weeks left, and has made a cellar ready with a covered crib. Regan wants to join her father outdoors; Marcus is afraid to go with him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A Quiet Place (2018)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Krasinski had Blunt in mind as he co-wrote the script but never asked her, worried she would decline or accept only to support him: "I just thought if she does this, she has to come to it on her own." She read the script on a flight and felt she needed to do it.
  • Krasinski sought a deaf actress and cast Millicent Simmonds as Regan, saying he did not want a non-deaf actress pretending to be deaf and wanted someone who lives it and could teach him about it on set.
  • During the writing stage Beck and Woods spoke to a Paramount executive who suggested the film could be a crossover with the Cloverfield franchise; when they brought in their final script, the studio embraced it as a distinct, stand-alone story.
  • SPOILERSimmonds suggested two changes: that the daughter rebel rather than cower during a sign-language fight with her father, and that his closing "I love you" be followed by "I've always loved you" to make up for their earlier arguing.
  • The filmmakers spent their budget locally, including buying 20 tons of corn which they hired local farmers to grow for the film.
