Plot summary
Princess Merida of Clan DunBroch lives in the medieval Scottish Highlands with her father, King Fergus, and her mother, Queen Elinor, who is trying to school her in the ways of a proper princess. Fergus gives his daughter a bow, and she becomes a skilled archer. When a match is arranged for her with a son of one of the allied clans, the chieftains and their firstborn sons come to the castle for the Highland games, which will decide who wins her hand. Merida twists the rules and competes for her own hand, beating every suitor. After a furious quarrel with Elinor, she rides into the forest, follows the will-o'-the-wisps to the hut of an old woodcarving witch, and bargains for a spell to change her mother.

- Chapman conceived the project and was announced as Pixar's first female director, but in October 2010 she was replaced by Mark Andrews after creative disagreements with John Lasseter. She found the news "devastating", though she later said her vision came through in the film.
- When artists rendered Merida thinner, with less frizzy hair and rounder eyes for her Disney princess crowning, the website A Mighty Girl petitioned Disney not to alter the character. One of the 262,196 signatories was the film's director, Brenda Chapman, who called the makeover "a blatantly sexist marketing move based on money".
- Witherspoon was on the project for a good while and had her Scottish accent sounding great, but other movies lined up and the crew had to find a replacement; in 2011 it was revealed that Merida would be voiced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.
- The tartan registration was celebrated at the film's British premiere in Edinburgh, where First Minister Alex Salmond handed a certificate to director Mark Andrews, but Member of the Scottish Parliament Alex Johnstone called it "shallow and irreverent", saying the 2008 legislation behind the Scottish Register of Tartans was meant to prevent such entries.
