Plot summary

Bert Rigby lives in Langmore, a mining town in northern England whose pit is failing, and most of the people around him depend on it. He shares a home with his mother, a musical fan, and Laurel Pennington, his sweetheart, lives next door above the pub where she works; they meet in a bomb shelter that straddles both back yards. When the miners strike again, Bert takes his chance on stage at an amateur show, singing "Isn't It Romantic?". An injury from football makes his nose bleed during the song, and the audience still takes to him. Bookings follow, as a comic on a touring amateur bill.
