Plot summary
Euphemia Gray, called Effie, becomes the wife of John Ruskin, a prosperous art critic and philosopher. The couple leaves Perth, Scotland, for London, where they stay in his parents' house. His hardhearted mother belittles the new bride, and Effie grows isolated in that household. Her husband avoids both the act and the subject of consummating the marriage. A dinner at the Royal Academy of Arts brings heated debate over the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which John supports.

- On 16 October 2015 the Court of Appeals ruled unanimously in Murphy's favour, holding that the District Court had "abused its discretion" in awarding Effie Film $500,000 in legal fees, and ordered the company to pay Murphy $603.80 in court costs.
- Eve Pomerance, author of two scripts on the same subject as Thompson's screenplay, brought the first court case over the film, originally titled Effie; in December 2012 a judge ruled Thompson's script was not in breach of copyright and could be released.
- The judge's ruling was based on a second, revised screenplay that the court allowed Thompson to submit in the middle of the case, which Murphy called "unprecedented"; Murphy appealed but the Second Circuit rejected the appeal.
