Danny the Champion of the World (1989) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1955, in the English countryside, William Smith is raising his nine-year-old son Danny alone; the two of them live in an old vardo and run a garage and filling station. Victor Hazell, a wealthy local profiteer who has bought the surrounding land, wants their plot too, and William will not sell. Hazell then uses his influence to send government inspectors around with petty complaints. A child welfare officer whose rattling car Danny repairs promises that the visits will stop. Danny begins a new school term, where Captain Lancaster, a harsh teacher, warns him about lateness. One night William slips out of the vardo, and Danny, waiting up, learns that his father has been poaching Hazell's pheasants with raisins as bait, the trick he once worked with his own father.
