Plot summary
A pair of London crooks, Brian Hope and Charlie McManus, want a quieter life in Brazil, away from the business and their young, brash boss, Casey. Their next job is to rob a Chinese Triad of its drug money, and Brian also falls for Faith, a waitress. When the robbery sends Casey, the Triad and the police after them, the two get away with the cash and take refuge in a convent, where they pass themselves off to the Sister Superior as Sisters Inviolata and Euphemia. The disguise has to hold in a house of women, including the young novices.

- 20th Century Fox bought the film for US distribution, and its head of production Joe Roth asked for a new ending, offering $500,000 to pay for it. Jonathan Lynn wrote the new ending and re-shot a love scene, and Fox was so impressed it gave him My Cousin Vinny.
- A copy of the script went to Michael Palin in December 1987 with Eric Idle's blessing, but Palin turned it down because he was busy making American Friends. Idle then suggested Robbie Coltrane be cast instead.
- After Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel ridiculed Fox's advertising for the film, Fox's marketing president Bob Harper said they would be barred from future press screenings - a ban he dropped after three weeks under pressure from the Chicago Film Critics Association.
- Eric Idle tried to raise money for the film through Prominent Features, the company Monty Python members formed in 1985, but failed. Financing instead came from HandMade Films, whose Denis O'Brien agreed on the condition that Idle star in it.
