Plot summary
Willy, 11, is certain that strange creatures lurk nearby and want to harm him, and the one place he feels safe is his own house. Then his parents decide to move, bringing a new school and an unfamiliar home. Gooby, Willy's old teddy bear, appears there, almost six feet tall, able to talk, and eager to help. Willy chooses to keep him as a friend while keeping him out of his parents' sight. Alone in the house while Willy attends school, Gooby gets restless. He persuades the nanny that critters are loose, takes cookies from the kitchen, tears the garage apart for parts to build a racer, and wanders near the school where anyone might spot him. Willy's teacher goes on maternity leave and Mr. Nerdlinger, a children's book author who longs for fame, takes the class.
